Grass Reared Meat

At Church Farm we pride ourselves on the welfare of our animals and on our traditional, slow-rear breeds and farming methods – ensuring that all our animals live happy, natural lives, producing the finest standard meats and the highest quality eggs.
All poultry, pigs and ruminants have constant access to grass and forage. When it comes to animal products the science tells us that "you are what your animals eat". Thus milk, meat, eggs that come from grass reared animals contains higher proportions of the good fats rather than the ones that cause obesity, diabtes etc being prominent.

Church Farm fields are in a Grass-Clover-herb ley mixture for 3 years building fertility to grow crops for the following two years.
This is the mix of species we plant enabling our cattle and sheep to gain a veried and full diet from the land.
This mixture is based on descriptions taken from Victorian seed merchants' catalogues. Traditional grazing mixtures contain a much wider range of grasses and herbs than modern ley mixtures, making them ideally suited to low input extensive grazing systems .
The mixture uses a blend of plants with complimentary characteristics that grow and mature at different times throughout the season. The legumes in the mixtures will fix nitrogen, feeding the grass. Herbs and legumes also make the grazing more palatable, with a higher protein and mineral content than a pure grass ley.
